Proud Piece
Terrifying Tarantulas
By: Patrick Fu
My inspiration for writing this poem is that I truly believe that tarantulas are one of the most misunderstood creatures in the world. They are such delicate and beautiful creatures that cause no harm to us, humans. I love tarantulas and have a sentimental attachment to them. They are very fun to take care of and you can develop a deep sense of love towards them over time, even if you despise them at first. I think that they are awesome even if some frown with disgust and think they are terrifying. This is why and how I was inspired to write this poem.
Terrifying tarantulas,
Waiting silently for their prey,
While the leaves in the rainforest,
Dance among the gusty winds.
It continues waiting,
Waiting...
Still in search of its prey.
Then when the sun sets in the tropical rainforest,
And while most creatures are asleep,
The tarantula exhibits its nocturnal behaviours,
Wandering from its burrow.
While walking silently on moist tropical grounds,
Its pedipalps and hairs pick up
vibrations from the distance,
The tarantula senses its prey.
It waits for the perfect time,
Then...
POUNCE!
Its large fangs sink deeply into the large roach,
Paralyzing its prey,
Soon, the large roach will be lifeless,
And be the meal of the large tarantula.
Why I am Proud: I am proud of this piece of work (poem) because I felt that I did a very good job on it due to the fact that I connected to the topic very well. I also really enjoyed writing this poem because I could express my thoughts and feelings on something that I really love. I learnt a lot about writing poems and now I am much improved at writing them.

Re: Lure
Praise: I think that this is an excellent novel, mainly because of the descriptive language that you have incorporated into it. It really helped me create a clear understanding of the novel considering the immense amount of compelling events that take the reader on many twists and turns. I also really liked how you change perspectives from John and Max (the haunter and the haunted) each new chapter. I have not read many novels that do this, but I can say without any doubt that this novel portrays the two perspectives the best. The two stories/perspectives really connect to each other well which made the novel much more enjoyable to read. The shocking and mind-boggling ending to the novel was awesome! It was very unpredictable which kept me guessing until the very end about how the story/mystery of John’s death unraveled. Overall, I think you did an exceptional job of writing your novel, Lure.
Question: I wonder why you decided to change perspectives throughout the entire novel (every new chapter)? I personally thought it made the novel more interesting and enjoyable to read but is this why you chose to write this way? Also, considering you wrote in two different perspectives, was it a plan to make them interconnect and make one of the perspectives the haunter and the other one the haunted. If so, why did you make this choice? Another question I have is how did you come up with such an intriguing plot/storyline? Was it based on a true history/myth/legend, because it sure seems like it. Also, is there a sequel to this novel, because if there is one, I am sure that it would be very successful considering your excellent ideas that make novels so compelling.
Polish: I think that if you want to improve this already excellent novel, you could possibly incorporate some more unpredictability into the chapters about Max. This will make the story better because the reader will have absolutely no sense of what is going to occur so he/she will be astonished. Predictability really affects the reader’s enjoyment so fixing that up would be a charm for the reader. Also, chapters on Max are a little bit blunt so at times I was not as intrigued when reading chapters on John. Another thing that can be improved in your novel is the conclusion of it. Sometimes, it tends to be very subtle, so the full effect of the shocking end does not register and therefore it got a little complex and confusing for me. I had to reread it a couple of times to get the full understanding. However, once I totally understood the ending, I admired your excellent mind-boggling conclusion to the novel. If you fix this issue, the story will be improved significantly considering the importance of the conclusion in novels. With these suggestions/improvement incorporated into your already awesome novel, I think that readers of all genres will be captivated by this novel.

Car Donut (Explaining to Parents and Friends/School)
Car Donut
By: Patrick Fu
Explaining to Parents:
As the battered up car my parents had lent me approached the driveway, I could already sense the loud shouting match that was going to take place. I did not understand why I decided to follow my friends persuations by doing the donut in a parking lot covered in ice. Unfortunately for me, this lead to crashing into a light pole. As the result, the rear end of my parents' car was totally crushed by the force of impact hitting the pole. I guess you can really get carried away when you're with friends! Nevertheless, I confidently entered the door, expecting to do some explaining to some parents who would surely become very angry. When my mom first saw me she greeted me witha simple wave of the hand. I replied back by doing the same. I waited to seize the moment that was perfect for explaining this incident. When she finally sat down on the couch, I knew this was the time.
"Umm...mom, can I tell you about a little trouble I got into today?"
"Sure, did you crash that expensive car that we had just lent to you?" she asked jokingly.
Then immediately, like thunder had just struck me, I was sick to the stomach. "Well, actually that is what happened," I replied back to her joke.
"What! How dare you!" my mom said just as my dad came in.
"What is going on here?" my dad asked
"My friends and I drove into an icy parking lot and started to do the donut. Then I accidently hit a light pole," I said cautiously, afraid that they would explode. Unfortunately, then the worst of the worst happened, they exploded.
"Why in the world would you ever think about doing that?" my dad shouted at me.
"But you don't understand!" I said trying furiously to speak between their yelling.
"No buts!" my mom said with a furious tone of voice.
That's when I had enough. I realized that nothing that I was going to say was going to convince them otherwise, so I stomped my way to my room. "Maybe my friends at school will understand," I murmured under my breath, as I slammed the door with rage behind me.
Car Donut
By: Patrick Fu
Explaining (Going to School):
I walked to school, bright red in the cheeks and full of embarrassment after what happened yesterday with my parents. I have not spoken to them since. "What should I say to my friends?" I muttered to myself quietly. At that moment, a flashback of the dreadful incident involving the crash invaded my mind. My friends somehow got me doing the donut in an ice covered parking lot. Then, the most dreadful part of the incident occured. The rear end of the car had crashed into into a light pole during the spinning of the vehicle. What made it suck even more was that it was my parents' car, and that I had just got my driver's license. When I had arrived at the school entrance, my head was spinning furiously. I was determined to tell my friends that were not with me in the car, without lying, hoping that they would not tease me for the rest of my life. I entered the school and quickly strolled down the hall to my locker. At my locker, shockingly, stood all my friends.
I immediately jolted back, amazed at the large group of people crowding my locker. They were all chanting "tell us!". At first, I had no idea what was going on but then I quickly caught on. "How did you guys find out about the crash? Did Jon tell you guys?" I asked the large crowd.
"Yup!" they all replied. "Hurry up and tell us. He didn't say anything except that there was a big crash!"
"Okay, calm down, I will." I said with some pride. I was extremely delighted by the fact that for once, I was the center of attention. Who needs parents, I thought to myself as I focused my attention back on the crowd awaiting to hear my story. "So here is how it started. Jon, Mike, Bob, and I were taking my parents' car out because I had just got my license. Then they somehow convinced me to go into a parking lot completely covered in ice." At this point, I could hear the murmurs and the excitement that was ready to burst out of everyone. I continued on with my story. 'Believe it or not, the next thing that they made me do was the donut."
"Awesome!" replied everyone.
"Then, while we were spinning, I accidently crashed into a light pole and the rear end of the car was totally crushed!" I said with some pride. Everybody at my locker was chatting away about my intriguing story just as the bell for period one class rang. I joyfully strolled down the hall to class, once again thinking what the point of having parents were.

Technological Discovery from the Mesopotamian Civilization
The "Wheel":
The wheel was used in Mesopotamia by about 3250 BCE, having been first utilized to make pottery. However, they were later attached to ploughs, carts, and war chariots to allow for easier movement. These vehicles were pulled by either donkeys or oxen. The enduring contribution of the discovery to today's society is that we now have the luxury of airplanes, cars, trains, and bikes (et cetera) as transportation. Without these great ways of transportation, you could easily imagine how difficult life would considerably get. However, wheels are not only used for transportation, they are also used by/for many other things. The discovery of the wheel has helped us greatly, most significantly, by making life easier. Also, many things would not function or even be existent if it weren't for wheels.
